This is a caricature of the great Charlie Chaplin which is another in a series of British comedians which I'm currently working on. I thought I'd show 'The Little Man' looking slightly indignant rather than the lost soul look he sometimes displayed!

Andy Parsons caricature

This is a quick caricature of the comedian Andy Parsons. What I'm trying to do with these caricatures is to keep the freshness of the drawing by not doing any pre-drawing i.e. using pencil etc. So I only get one go at it otherwise I try again. I think this one worked...

Kate Humble

This is a caricature I drew of Kate Humble over the Easter break. Not sure that I warm particularly to this lady as I've not been impressed with the various programmes I've seen her on. I'm sure she'd be devastated to hear me talk about her like this.....

Holiday work

I've just returned from a week's holiday where I'd spent time drawing people I wanted to draw for a change! This is a caricature of a certain General Mario Mendez who was the Military Govenor during the Argentine occupation of the Falklands. It was taken from a photograph in a magazine where he was talking about the situation he found himself in back then and there seemed to be a lot of sorrow in his face.



This is a drawing of two members of Snow Patrol - vocalist Gary Lightbody and bassist Paul Wilson. This again was taken from an article where they were discussing why Lightbody didn't have a girlfriend. Can't understand it myself...

Of course, if it was a caricature of him being a werewolf, something odd would have happened to his snout and eyes but then it wouldn't have looked like him would it? This is a typical dilemma of being a caricaturist.....

This is a caricature of Jeremy Clarkson - he of the fast cars, mad childlike tv capers and a closet environmentalist. Liz has always held the theory that you can always see the little boy in a man's face and never was that more true than with Clarkson. I think his Top Gear programme is a modern take on Last of the Summer Wine.

Welsh Rugby

I've been an avid follower of the current World Cup in New Zealand and have been very impressed with the new players in the Wales squad. The captain, number 8 Sam Warburton, has been immense in this tournament and he and the whole squad have won a lot of respect from the Rugby-wise New Zealenders (not known for being easily impressed!). There's not a lot further to be said about Warburton's sending off in the semi-final and subsequent three week ban. Anyway, here's a quick caricature of him...



I couldn't resist having a crack at a caricature of the Wales defence coach and ex Rugby League supremo, Shaun Edwards, who seems to have instilled a tough defensive attitude amongst the squad. When asked if his attitude was too tough and that surely he wouldn't expect his boys to carry on if they were seriously injured he replied something along the lines of "Well, no, if they had a broken leg or something obvioulsy.....but I'd still expect them to get up and make the tackle!" That's the mind-set he's given them.....

The Now Show

Here's another caricature from my 'comedians' series and so here is my take on Stewart Lee. He has an interesting sort of smirk that you know has appeared as he's let loose another barbed and intelligent witticism.

Here's a quick caricature of the comedian Milton Jones who's appeared on Mock the Week etc etc and seems to have developed the Ken Dodd comedian old school approach to hair dressing!

Comedian Jack Whitehall

I spent some time during the recent Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival talking to the caricaturist Jonathan Cusick (follow link to his blog at bottom of this blog) and we got talking about decent sketchbooks. I should point out that most cartoonists/caricaturists don't use such things and so it was good to discuss such nerdy topics with a young professional! In the course of the evening I complained about the lack of weight in most available sketcbook papers as they always 'cockle' i.e. buckle when the watercolour is added and doesn't smooth out again which is REALLY irritating. Anywy Jonathan promised to forward links to various art suppliers with decent weighted paper in their sketchbooks and I recently bought a new book. The quick caricature of the comedian Jack Whitehall is the first one in the book and, hoorah, not a cockle in sight. Thank you Jonathan!

Toby Jones

There are some faces that just cry out to be caricatured and I've always thought that the actor Toby Jones was one. So I've spent some time on trying to caricature him and I found it quite difficult which was all a bit of a suprise. I should point out that I try to draw staright onto paper with black ink these days i.e. I try to capture the likeness in just a few minutes (no initial pencil work) so that I can capture some sort of spontaneity in the drawing. I know what I wanted to do with this caricature in my head but when I tried to draw it it just didn't work.....just didn't look like him. I'm often asked at events "Are some people easier to draw than others?" and I always answer that, as a caricaturist, some are a godsend while others are what we call 'potato faces' i.e. no outstanding features which can be exaggerated (potato faces are usually very good looking faces by the way!). Anyway, I thought Toby Jones was a godsend of a face which just goes to show how wrong I can be!!
