Caricature of the actor and director Danny DeVito. He's dyed his hair sandy blond apparently...

Latest musings

A couple of images from the latest sketchbook.

This first image was an effort at 'reportage' (where you draw what's going on around you) when I was working at the recent Queen's Jubilee celebrations at RAF Cosford. I'd been drawing caricatures all day so it was nice to take a break and do another type of drawing!

This is another one of those teapots I find around the place - this one has obvious Pisa influences.

More images of Venice

The very first skecth I drew - this is as far as I got before the detail of the place started to get to me...

Then I decided to draw buildings while we were sitting in a sreet cafe having coffee etc...

A LOT of coffee actually......

These are the classic street lamps they have all over Venice while the gargoyle was a particularly impressive example!

These two 'cool dudes' were sitting opposite us at a restaurant and were just so funny to watch - I just had to draw them...

Recent trip to Venice

Just returned from a brilliant 12 day holiday in Venice. I took a couple of sketchbooks along with me fully inetnding to do plenty of sketching but I'd forgotten just how beautiful the city is and, to be honest, I was intimidated by it. There's so much detail everywhere....anyway, the above sketch was the view just around the corner from out apartment. It's only a small section of the view - if you multiply the width it by at least 4 then you'll get some idea of the view!

Charlie Chaplin

This is a caricature of the great Charlie Chaplin which is another in a series of British comedians which I'm currently working on. I thought I'd show 'The Little Man' looking slightly indignant rather than the lost soul look he sometimes displayed!

Andy Parsons caricature

This is a quick caricature of the comedian Andy Parsons. What I'm trying to do with these caricatures is to keep the freshness of the drawing by not doing any pre-drawing i.e. using pencil etc. So I only get one go at it otherwise I try again. I think this one worked...

Henley Royal Regatta cartoon

I sold this cartoon at an exhibition held at the Henley Royal Regatta shop and they've now turned it into a greetings card. It is now on sale at the Henley Royal Regatta shop at a very competitive price of £2.50. Worth every penny I'd say especially as the proceeds go to the Steward's Charitable Trust which go around the country encouraging young people to row i.e. row as in 'row a boat' as opposed to getting angry with someone and having a row! (many thanks to Royston Robertson for pointing out to me where the proceeds of the card sales go to!). They also asked me to produce a cartoon for the Regatta official programme as well, so there!

Kate Humble

This is a caricature I drew of Kate Humble over the Easter break. Not sure that I warm particularly to this lady as I've not been impressed with the various programmes I've seen her on. I'm sure she'd be devastated to hear me talk about her like this.....

Ronnie Corbett

This is a recent caricature of the comedian Ronnie Corbett. I was going to use some reference images of him with a sadder looking face but the big smile won through in the end!

Holiday work

I've just returned from a week's holiday where I'd spent time drawing people I wanted to draw for a change! This is a caricature of a certain General Mario Mendez who was the Military Govenor during the Argentine occupation of the Falklands. It was taken from a photograph in a magazine where he was talking about the situation he found himself in back then and there seemed to be a lot of sorrow in his face.

This is a drawing of two members of Snow Patrol - vocalist Gary Lightbody and bassist Paul Wilson. This again was taken from an article where they were discussing why Lightbody didn't have a girlfriend. Can't understand it myself...

Russell Tovey

A caricature of the actor Russell Turvey when he played the part of the werewolf in the television series Being There. Of course, if it was a caricature of him being a werewolf, something odd would have happened to his snout and eyes but then it wouldn't have looked like him would it? This is a typical dilemma of being a caricaturist.....

Jeremy Clarkson

This is a caricature of Jeremy Clarkson - he of the fast cars, mad childlike tv capers and a closet environmentalist. Liz has always held the theory that you can always see the little boy in a man's face and never was that more true than with Clarkson. I think his Top Gear programme is a modern take on Last of the Summer Wine.

Bertrand Russell OM FRS

Here's a caricature of the english mathematician, philosopher, educator, social critic, political and peace activist and possibly the first television intellectual. And he was a Nobel Laureate...
